19 December 2001

Paul Sanderson has been appointed to the post of Director, Modernisation for the Valuation Office Agency. He succeeds Bruce Jones who is retiring.

Paul Sanderson, who is currently Director of Rating for the VOA, takes up his new post in January. His main brief is to direct the implementation of the agency's strategic aims in connection with modernising the rating valuation system and, in particular, to involve ratepayers more closely in the system and improve the flow of information that will assist ratepayers developing a better understanding and acceptance of the system.

He will lead the next revaluation of business rates, preparations for which start shortly. It will take effect from 1 April 2005.

Commenting on his new appointment, Mr Sanderson said, 'In the past year we have got very much closer to business ratepayers at both national and local level and have begun to involve them directly in how their properties are valued for rating. This relationship with ratepayers will become increasingly important as we get closer to the next rates revaluation. We will continue to work closely with professional advisers involved in the rating system, but they understand that our first obligation is to ratepayers. We need to ensure that ratepayers have a full understanding of the rating system and give them the opportunity to be involved in the revaluation process'.

Paul Sanderson is 49 and lives in Bedfordshire with his wife and two sons. In his spare time he is a keen photographer and enjoys a variety of sports.
