Your council tax bill will show the payment that you have to make and will also include the council tax band your property falls in.

Queries about your council tax bill

For any queries relating to the amount of your bill and payment options please contact your local council, who are separate from the VOA.

Your local council sets the level of council tax each year and the amount you pay depends on how much the local council and other public bodies in your area spend on services and how much money they receive from elsewhere.  Your local council also assesses eligibility and applies discounts where applicable.

Full contact details for your council will be on your council tax bill, or in your local telephone directory.

Queries about your council tax banding

Council tax bandings are based on what a property would have sold for, at a fixed point in time: 1 April 1991 in England and 1 April 2003 in Wales.

If you have a question about the council tax banding of your home or would like more information on council tax please visit the council tax section of our website.

Please note if your property is in band A, the lowest band range, the VOA cannot reduce the band further.  Please check with your local council to see whether you are eligible for any discounts on your bill.

Queries on water rate bills

For queries relating to your water rates bill and specifically the rateable value on which your charges are based you should contact your local water company.

Water Rates have no direct link with council tax bands.  However, many bills are still based on old domestic Rateable Values, which pre-date the introduction of Council Tax.

This is a method of charging for water over which the Valuation Office Agency has no jurisdiction at all.  As a result the VOA is unable to answer queries relating to your water rates in particular the rateable value - which does not relate to the value of your property used in allocating a council tax band under the current rules.
