Council Tax > Provisions for people with disabilities

Any special fixtures designed to make your home suitable for a person with a disability, which add to its value will have been disregarded when the property was valued for council tax purposes. This means that your home would have been valued as if the special fixtures were not there, so that your home is not placed in a higher band because of them.

On the other hand, if your home has special fixtures which reduce its value, they should be taken into account in deciding which valuation band your home should be in. This means that, because of the fixtures, your home may be placed in a lower band than it otherwise would have been. If you do not think the fixtures have been taken into account, you should contact us. You can find the address and telephone number of your nearest Valuation Office by checking the where to find us pages.

There is a separate scheme of relief for people with disabilities . If you, or someone living with you, needs extra space to use a wheelchair within the property, or an extra room, kitchen or bathroom because of a disability, you may be eligible for a reduction in your bill.

If you think that your circumstances may qualify for relief you should contact your local council (billing authority) for an application form. Eligibility for relief will be decided by the council and not the listing officer, because the band which appears in the Council Tax Valuation List will remain unchanged.
