refine-your-searchRefine Your Search page
This screen gives you various options for limiting your search, to either individual properties, types of properties, or properties in a specific billing authority or postal area.

It is also possible to search against any appeals that have been made against rating assessments.

The page is divided into two sections.

The first section allows you to restrict your search to a particular billing authority by either entering the billing authority name directly or entering the first part of the postcode of the area you are interested in.

By clicking on the ‘ Select BA ’ button you will be presented with a list of matching billing authorities to chose from.

The next section allows you to limit your search by property details. You can limit your search using the following criteria :

Name or Number
The name and or, number of the property you wish to find. As the format of the name/number in the rating list can be complex, if you do not find the entry you are looking for you are advised to start a new search of the rating list using the postcode or select the street (which will retrieve all of the properties in the street.

You can use either * or % as a mask e.g %45 will identify

  • 1st Floor 45
  • 2nd Floor 45
  • Grd Flr & Bst 45
  • Rose Cottage 45
  • etc..

Street
The name of the street the property is located in.

Town
The name of the town.

Post Code
Enter the full postcode or the first few characters.

For example in the rating list for Brighton and Hove, entering BN* will retrieve all properties in the Brighton area. ‘ BN1* ’ will retrieve all properties in Brighton postcode district 1. A full postcode will limit the search to only those properties with that postcode - usually between 10 and 15 addresses. [NB as only geographical postcodes are held in this application, you cannot use ‘large user’ postcodes]

Billing Authority Reference
A reference number used by billing authorities to identify your property. This is often a several digit, alphanumeric number, though they can vary in length between different authorities. As each authority independently sets up its own reference system, the number may not necessarily be unique.

Description Code
A code used for statistical purposes to categorise the type of the property. This code may be used to limit your search - for example ‘ CS* ’ will retrieve all shops. A list of codes and their definitions is available by clicking on the downward pointing arrow to the right of the box.

Non – Standard Description
The textual description for the type of property. If for example the search is ‘ PUB* ’ this will retrieve only public houses if the appropriate code has been entered in the last field, or, both public houses and public conveniences if no code was entered.

Part Domestic?
Indicates whether the property is partially occupied for domestic use. Select either “All‘ to search on all properties or “Composite” to restrict the search to properties that are partially used for domestic purposes. Select “Non-Composite” for properties that are purely non-domestic.

Appeal Settlement Type
This is a settlement code to indicate that the rating assessment has changed as a result of a proposal (appeal) made by an interested person, (e.g. the property occupier, owner, or ratepayer), or the billing authority. If an agreement could not be reached with the valuation officer, then the appeal is decided by a Valuation Tribunal. It is possible to appeal against a Valuation Tribunal decision to the Lands Tribunal, (and from there on a point of law to the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords). A Settlement code may be selected to limit your search. A list of codes and their definitions is available by clicking on the downward pointing arrow to the right of the description box.

Special Category Code
The following Settlement Codes are available for selection:
  • A - The entry was agreed following negotiation with the valuation officer.
  • C - The entry was confirmed by the Valuation Tribunal as correct.
  • F - The valuation officer accepted without negotiation, that the proposed change(s) to the assessment put forward by the Interested Person, was correct.
  • L - The entry is the result of a Lands Tribunal decision.
  • O - The entry is the result of a consent order (agreed).
  • T - The entry was confirmed by the Lands Tribunal as correct.
  • V - The entry was determined by decision of the Valuation Tribunal.
Rateable Value
Properties may be searched for by specifying a range for the rateable value. For example entering 5000 in ‘ Greater Than ’ and 10000 in ‘ Less Than ‘ will retrieve all properties with a rateable value within that range. Specifying only 5000 as a 'Greater Than' value will retrieve all properties with a rateable value of 5000 or greater. When you have entered all the details you want, click on the “Go” button to restrict your search results.
