The functions of The Rent Service have transferred to the VOA
As of 1 April 2009, the functions of The Rent Service (TRS) transferred to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). This means that TRS no longer exists as a standalone agency but has been merged into the VOA. All the services rent officers provided under TRS will continue. In practice, this means ‘business as usual’.

As part of the Government’s Wider Reform agenda, the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) system was introduced in April 2008. The move to LHA changed the focus of the work undertaken by TRS. Together with other efficiencies, the reducing workload required significantly fewer staff.
The Government decided that it would be more efficient for the functions of TRS to be integrated with the VOA, due to the strong similarities between the two organisations. It will also allow further efficiencies and improvements in service, where possible, in order to provide better value for money to taxpayers.
Please note that Rent Officers Wales and the Rent Service Scotland remain as independent organisations.
